12/20/19 Traditions of Jewelry - Gift making with Ken Fury and Jen Mazza

Students engage in creating original jewelry pieces using earth elements, inexpensive objects to form an original design. Crystals and copper necklaces as a base with Ken Fury and ribbon and metal washer pieces with Jen Mazza. Ken shared his body of work influenced from his Native American- Latinx heritage of jewlery making, created objects as currency. 

 

12/18/19 Dance Vocabulary with Ken Fury PART 2

This PART 2 session combined original beat making and creation of movement vocabulary with Ken Fury based on break dancing art forms. Students explored deepening their group choreography set to their original beats and how to integrate their original interpretations to create new materials in groups.

12/10/19 Music and Dance Integration with Baba Israel and Ken Fury

This session combined original hip hop beat making with Baba Israel and creation of movement vocabulary with Ken Fury based on break dancing. Students explored the origins of the hip hop movement, its cultural influences and how to integrate their original interpretations to create new materials in groups.

12/5/19 Theatre of the Oppressed with Raquel Almazan - PART 2



Students are introduced to the principals of Theatre of the Oppressed techniques, a theatre movement by Augusto Boal. Raquel Almazan lead the group in exploring cultural identity, the meaning of names, youth community rights and image theatre. Intervention through the protagonist in forum theatre was introduced as well.

11/26/2019 Music recording with Baba Israel and Grace Galu


Building on the prior two music sessions: students review lyrics created with Grace Galu and create original beats/track with Baba Israel to integrate lyrics and tracks to create a final recording of their collectively created song.

11/21/2019 Visiting the Poster Museum through a Guided Tour

Students visit the The Poster House, for two exhibits, Baptized by Beef Cake: Hand Painted Movie Posters From Ghana and 20/20 Insights: Posters from the 2017 Womens March. Guided tour and facilitation provided by Sierra Van Ryck deGroot, director of education programs. Students engage in a workshop to create group images drawn on the walls of the museum workshop.

11/19/2019 Social Justice poster making with Angel Lopez

With teaching artist Angel Lopez students utilize the iconography of basic shapes and music lyrics to create posters with their own unique design and messages they are personally invested in.

Hip hop artist, writer, activit Baba Israel and Grace Galu, song writer and vocalist introduced students to group lyric writing and hip hop beat making towards creating an original song. Students collaboate to integrate beats with lyrics.

Off site field trip visit to a cultural community anchor, Angelika Film Center to attend a screening of the film Harriet, biography pic of the historical accounts of abolitionist, Harriet Tubman. 

11/6/2019 Spoken word with Toni Blackman

Introduction to group poetry making, spoken word, rhyming and improvsational word play and writing poetry with guest artist, Toni Blackman.



10/31/2019 Re-framing Halloween context as a practice to honor ancestors and culture through poetry

Through the process of interacting with an object from an ancestor, culture, family ties or an object of meaning; students create a short writing piece, guided by Huiying B. Chan activist and artist with Chinatown Art Brigade. How the work at Chinatown Art Brigade intersects advocacy with cultural heritage and placemaking.

10/29/2019 Ancestor visual work with Ben Rojas PART 2

Through family tree map making, discussion on valuing our history, culture, students created Day of the Dead ancestor skulls in relationship to an ancestor they will honor. A larger altar offering was created with all the skulls as well as objects brought in from each participant that has a signifance to culture and or a specific ancestor.  Ben Rojas guided the process and intentions of building altars, what materials can be used to make altars and the signifiance of the practice today.

10/24/2019 Music Exploration with nature with Eric Escalante and Fernando Lechon


Indigenous Music Session Part 2 with Eric Escalante and Fernando Lechon. Students were introduced to a variety of instruments used in creating music in relationship to the practice of the Andes. Integration of movement and call and response were explored.
